ADSL Thailand

The selection of modems available can be confusing, D-Link, Zyxel, Alcatel, Alied Data, PCI, SMC, Billion and probably more trying to sell there ADSL Modem or Router products. We will try to help to clear up this confusing with our website.

What is ADSL

ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, a new technology that allows more data to be sent over existing copper telephone lines (POTS). ADSL supports data rates of from 1.5 to 9 Mbps when receiving data (downstream rate) and from 16 to 640 Kbps when sending data (upstream rate).

An ADSL connection requires a special ADSL modem, which works different from the modems we use for connecting to an analog 56k Internet provider.

ADSL is growing in popularity in Thailand and the rest of the World as more areas around the world gain access.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of ADSL?

A non-exhaustive list is as follows:

Advantages Disadvantages
1) High speed "always on" connection
2) Fixed monthly cost
3) Great value for money
3) Competitive modem & router prices

1) Not available to everybody (Especially up-country),
2) Contended service could result in variable speeds depending upon time of day
4) Possible teething troubles for new or inexperienced customers.

What do I need to get online?
Telephone Line. Also, it has to be within 3.5 to 5.5 kilometres of an ADSL enabled exchange (call the telephone company to check).

An ADSL Modem or Router
Most ISPs will supply you with a modem or router at additional cost. A number of (online) retailers are also competing to sell you their products. Connection equipment can be broken down into 3 basic categories:

PCI ADSL Modem
The cheapest way to get online with prices below that of a USB ADSL modem. Requires knowledge of how to install into your computer, and is frequently referred to as an "internal" device. PCI ADSL modems deliver the best response times (gamers take note!) but also consume CPU cycles to operate.

USB ADSL Modem
The easiest way to get online with prices averaging around the 1925 Baht mark. Just pop in the CD, install the drivers and plug in the modem. The majority of home users chose USB modems to get online.

Ethernet/Wireless Router
A standalone device which maintains the connection to the Internet for you. Most routers have an Ethernet connection to your local area network and act as a gateway, DNS, DHCP and firewall service. Computer enthusiasts or businesses can use a router to connect multiple computers to the Internet without the need for connection sharing software such as Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing (ICS).

A Micro-Filter for each Phone Socket
A micro-filter is designed to plug into your phone socket (similar to a standard splitter used to connect multiple telephones). Its purpose is to separate voice from data and must be connected to each phone socket in your house. If you do not have a telephone, or any device which uses the phone line, a micro-filter isn't required. Most ISPs in Thailand include this with the modem and for additional telephone connections you can buy at retailers who sell micro filters.
